S3 pupils from Hazlehead Academy have been
undertaking a Sports Leadership qualification. As part of their course, they
have been working with primary pupils from Hazlehead School, helping the
youngsters there to develop their ball skills and hand to eye coordination.

Interhouse continued today with the Build-It
competition. Teams had to design a new tower for Aberdeen - much like the
Eiffel Tower in Paris. We're not sure if Aberdeen city are going to take up

again with the Tug-of-War competition. One of four competitions this week it
will pave the way for the finale - the Swimming Gala. The teams for the

Pupils from Hazlehead's S4
to S6 have raised £2650 by sleeping - well not quite but they did
raise the money! Pupils had taken part in the annual Cyrenians Sleepout and
today handed over a cheque to the Cyrenian's School Worker, Yvonne Forrest.
The cheque was handed over during the S4 Assembly and Head Teacher Ms
Murison congratulated the pupils on their efforts and the efforts they had

The PTA is holding a Quiz Night on Tuesday 23rd
March in the Hazlehead Golf Club from 7.30 pm sharp. Parents, pupils and staff are all
welcome. Tickets are priced at £2 for adults and £1 for pupils. Lots of nice raffle prizes will be on offer
but the PTA are looking for donations of more!! All profits go towards
improving facilities for your children

from Roland Jones and his dog Coby. Roland, an active member of
Aberdeen Mountain Rescue Team and SARDA (Search and rescue Dog Association,
Scotland), talked with the group about their work together before

Two Hazlehead S3 pupils, Calum McRobb and James
Munro of S3, have taken part in the 2010 Europe Direct School debate. The
boys were the only S3 pupils taking part and were competing against older
pupils from schools across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. The contestants
had to work as a team with another school and the judges commended the
Hazlehead pupils for their excellent teamwork. more>>

U13 Football
The Under 13 squad has been taking part in the U13
Esso trophy quarter final ( Grampian region). They
beat Robert Gordon's College by 3 goals t0 2.
Scorers were Darren Milne, Tyler Kelman and Lee
Brown. They now face Cults Academy in the
semi-final. U15 Football
Hazlehead Under 15's go
marching on! The 'Heid took a step closer
to Scottish cup glory on Saturday when they
entertained a very talented Peterhead side. Despite
the damp conditions, an exciting game was played
with both teams acquitting themselves very well.
Hazlehead produced a lot of excellent football,
coupled with some clinical finishing, resulted in
the home side winning the match 4-2. Scorers on the
day were Christie (2), Knox and Scott. Hazlehead
have therefore advanced into the last 16 of the
competition and with a home tie in the next round,
will look forward to welcome their next opponents,
whoever they may be."

Cyrenians Sleepout with one of the largest contingents of pupils. Over 90

this weekend to raise money for improvements to the school climbing wall.
The youngsters are being sponsored to climb the height of Ben Nevis,

It was the turn of Form Tutors to gain points
for their Houses today in the new Interhouse competition - Tutor, Tutor Team
Challenge. After a slow start the teams rallied and it went to a tie-break
between Greyfriars and Craigievar with Greyfriars just edging into the
winning position. The team of three Form Tutors with Mrs Taylor, the House
Guidance Teacher are obviously happy with their win, as are the House

series of presentations at Amec's headquarters in Altens recently. The
students went along to hear more about a placement scheme being offered by
the company. Amec are offering placements within a number of disciplines
within the company including finance, HR, commercial and design. more>>

It has been announced that Hazlehead Academy is
to be visited by HM Inspectorate of Education on the week beginning the 1st
of February 2010. Each household will be given a letter via their child
about the inspection and a number will also be issued with questionnaires to
give to parents. Please check with your child to see what they have received

Hazlehead Academy reopened its
doors today to pupils following a very chilly Christmas break. The
janitors have been hard at work keeping the areas around the school
as safe as possible.
Whilst playing in snow can be
great fun, snowballing can present considerable dangers and all
pupils have been given strict warnings that snowballing is not
allowed in the school playground, only in the school playing fields
well away from the school.

taking place over the next two weeks at Hazlehead Academy's
Associated Primary Schools. Presentations will be given by senior
staff and pupils on the transfer process of P7 pupils to the

Over 200 parents, staff and pupils
have enjoyed a Christmas Carol service at Sheddocksly Baptist
Church. The Annual carol service with nine readings was a most
enjoyable affair and thanks go to all those who provided such an
enjoyable evening - both staff and pupils of the school and church
members who provided refreshments afterwards. Special thanks to
Laura and her team in the kitchen!

based on the artwork of the Australian sculptor, Ron Mueck. His work created

A group of S2 pupils have been hard at work
repainting a maths classroom. This unusual activity was all part of an
exercise to make maths more relevant. The pupils had, with their parents
permission, to raise sponsorship, calculate costings, calculate areas and
paint coverage and then finally apply the paint to the walls! They did a
splendid job.

Hazlehead S6 students currently in Norway on a work placement programme have
reached the end of their time in Norway. Reports back indicate that all
impressed the staff at their placements and although there will be some
sadness at leaving new friends in Norway, they have the excitement of

HAZLEHEAD ACADEMY - 32 PERIOD WEEK CONSULTATION
Proposals are being put forward which will alter the Hazlehead Academy
school day from new timetable in June 2010. Currently,
there are 40 x 40 minute periods in the week. It is proposed that the new
school week will consist of 32 x 50 minute periods. This will also slightly
alter the timings of the school day.

running the Rotary Shoebox Appeal, to send boxes over to Central and Eastern
Europe, to try to help make less fortunate children's Christmas a better
time for them. Today, the boxes were collected by the Rotary organisation

place over the last five weeks with contestants using their IT knowledge to
find the answers to a series of questions posed by the school librarians.

'Make Your Mark Challenge 2009'. This is a way of improving students’
enterprise skills through work related learning. It is based on a national
competition in which pupils have to undertake a task.

challenge set the pupils was to come up with a new and innovative business

workshop. Dr Lesley Watson, a consultant Pathologist from Grampian NHS, give

initiative at Hazlehead in conjunction with the Parent Council. "I hope
the term is going well for your son or daughter and they are enjoying the
wide range of opportunities available to them at Hazlehead Academy. We have
our first Parent Forum evening this term, the theme being "Learn
how to help your child succeed." Teaching staff will be running a
series of workshops on homework, study/revision skills and extra-curricular
activities. I am looking forward to meeting as many parents as possible at
the event (23rd November at 7pm) and will give
a short presentation on where we are in terms of implementing A Curriculum

Hazlehead's Channel Five Theatre Company
presents 'Hair' all this week. Channel Five always
produces a stunning show and this year is no different. Tickets are selling
fast so get yours from the school office now. The show runs from Tuesday
10th November till Friday 13th November in the Academy's Assembly Theatre.
Adults £8, Children £4, not suitable for children under 10. Show begins at
7.30.
Hazlehead Academy is to hold a fund raising
event in the form of a Fashion Show. Held in conjunction with 'Bon-Ton
Fashions', it will be held in the staffroom of the Academy at 7.00 pm on
Wednesday 18th November. Included in the models will be a number of
teachers!

Final - SPORTS NEWS
U13 Football team The U13 team proved themselves by coming back from
being 2-0 down against Northfield in a match last week. The
boys stormed back with six goals in the second half to leave
the final score Northfield 2 - 7 Hazlehead. This was the
last game before the October holidays and gives the boys
seven wins with only one defeat.

and today with the S1 Football competition. Thanks to a superb performance
in the S1 football, Craigievar have taken the lead in the InterHouse

Hazlehead MTB Club forms links with Aberdeen University MTB
Club.
Five new members of the mountain bike club enjoyed an introductory ride
around Kirkhill forest after school on Thursday. The group was accompanied
by three members of Aberdeen University Mountain Bike Club who are keen to
encourage Hazlehead pupils who are interested in the sport. This is the
third ride with both members of the school and uni mountain bike clubs and
there are others planned!

The Book Fair held in the LRC 14th -
22nd September was a great success. We sold over £450 of books and
stationary which helps raise funds for the library. Everyone who bought
something had their name entered in a prize draw. The lucky winners were
James Milne 2BV, Andrew Farman 1BV, Sarah Currie 1DF and Neil Yacamini 1DF
who were able to choose a free item from the Book Fair. Huge thanks to all
who supported the Fair by spending money. Thanks also to the Tuesday Book
Group and to Steven Davidson and Joanne Morrison for assistance.

The InterHouse competition continued yesterday
and today with the S5/6 Football competition. There were some excellent

S1 Football team The S1 football team have had their first defeat of
the season in an away match against Bridge of Don Academy.
They lost out by 4 goals to 3. Despite performing well and
deserving to win, they had a mad 5 minute spell where they
lost three quick goals. This proved too hard to recover
from. Hazlehead scorers were Steven Lawrie, Lee Brown and
Darren Milne.

S1 Football team The S1 football team have maintained their 100%
record in two recent matches. They came out top in
a League match with Dyce by winning 4-0. Scorers were Steven Lawrie,
Reece Matthew, Dylan Wilson and Stuart Charleton. This gives
them 4 wins from 4 matches. On Monday this week they played
Mintlaw Academy, also in a League match, and won 4-2.
Scorers were Steven Lawrie (2), Thomas Booth and Tyler
Kelman.

A large articulated lorry was parked outside
Hazlehead Academy today when 'Lab in a Lorry visited the school. A number of
S2 classes were able to visit and find out more about science in the lorry
which is an interactive mobile science laboratory staffed by volunteer

Five members of the Hillwalking club led by Mr Webster and Mr
McConnell undertook their second hike and bike expedition last weekend. The
group loaded the bikes and expedition kit onto the school bus and mountain
bike trailer after school on Friday and set off to the Linn of Dee arriving

Undeterred by the heaviest
rainfall the North East has experienced for some time eight members of the
Mountain Bike Club enjoyed a 5km cycle around Kirkhill Forest on Thursday
after school. For five members of the group this was their first proper ride

time against Northfield Academy in the 1st Round of the
Green Final Trophy. The managed to maintain their 100%
record by beating Northfield by 7 goals to 1. Goals came
from Steven Lawrie (4), Darren Milne, Tyler Kelman and Reece
Matthew.

Eleven S5 and S6 students from this year's Young
Enterprise company, along with two members of staff, attended the annual
Masterclass on Tuesday evening. This year, the event was held at Curl
Aberdeen, and had the highest numbers ever attending. While the students
were given an introduction to the programme of events, the teachers had a

The first year football team
kicked off their league campaign with a hard fought 1-0
victory against Harlaw Academy. Right back Dylan Wilson
settled the match with a 30 yard rocket in the bottom corner
with 7 minutes remaining.

schools from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in the 2009 OilSim competition.
Eighty-two teams including three from Hazlehead have been putting their
skills to the test in an oil exploration simulation. This includes
interpreting geological data, hiring of drilling rigs and support services
and bartering with other oil companies for drilling rights. more>>

Football
Hazlehead'sS1 football team has beaten Mintlaw 4 -1 in the 1st Round
of the Esso Trophy. The team played very well for their first
competitive match together with goals from Steven Lawrie (2), Reece
Matthew and Tyler Kelman. Active Schools
Last year, Active Schools run a very successful coach
education programme with over 10 courses in a variety of activities
being delivered to volunteers, staff and coaches throughout the
year. This year we are expanding our range of courses to include
activities which will be targeting secondary children, as well as
primary age groups.

pupils took part this weekend in the annual Abernethy Experience. Travelling
to the Abernethy Outdoor Centre in the Ciorngorm National Park, they sampled
an awesome assault course, gorge walking, coasteering, and river activities.

The Hazlehead Academy Awards Ceremony for 2009
was held last night. As well as seeing the award of prizes, a packed hall of
guests, parents and pupils were also treated to music from the school
orchestra. A number of 'surprise' tributes were sprung on retiring Rector,
Brian Wood. He also received a standing ovation from the assembled guests
and pupils.

Principal Teacher of Drama, Chris Begg, and Chairperson of
Channel Five, Jenny MacIntosh, presented the Academy's retiring Rector with
a silver quaich today. The presentation commemorated Mr Wood's
association with Channel Five and the support he has given it over his
16 years as rector. This includes taking an on-stage role in the 2001
production 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

Six members of the advanced MTB group enjoyed a challenging ride at the
Pitfichie mountain bike trails east of Aberdeen on Thursday evening. The
ride was 16km long (about 10miles) with a couple of nice long challenging
climbs, incorporating mud, water and tricky rock features, to the summit of
Cairn William (448m).
Glamour was the order
of the day at Hazlehead's Formal held at the Hilton Treetops last night. The
evening was a tremendous success with students and staff sharing an evening
of celebration. With the boys wearing Highland outfits and the girls in a
variety of gowns and dresses, the effect was simply stunning!

Individual letters have also been issued to pupils transferring - either

Hazlehead Academy has
won a major award for the second time! Short listed for four prizes at this
year's Children and Young People's Service Awards, Hazlehead took the
Schools Award for the second time. Awarded for outstanding achievement, it
was won for the Academy's winning of a Green Flag for a third time - only
the second secondary school in Scotland to do so.
Hockey
Congratulations to all hockey players
who participated in the Active Schools 8-a-side Hockey Festival at
Rubislaw on Tuesday of this week. The pupils conduct was excellent
and both teams finished the season on a high, clinching first and
second spot against opposition from Cults and Banchory
Academies. The teams also conceded no goals - a great effort!

Pupils in S1 to S3
have now moved up a year and become the new S2, S3 and S4. This was after an
Activities Week where pupils took part in a range of residential, outdoor
and indoor activities. These ranged from Mediterranean water sports through

and S6 have returned to school this week and are experiencing a week long
Senior Student Conference. The week includes instruction on how to become a

Rector Brian Wood presented
those leaving with their 'Record of Achievement' folders and wished them all
the best in their future careers and studies. It was an especially poignant
moment for Mr Wood as it was the last time he would say farewell to a

Garthdee before Easter to compete in the Scottish finals of the
International ROV competition.

International ROV Competition is organised
by the Marine Advanced Technology Education Centre in Monterey
California and aims to challenge students to design and build an ROV
that functioned as a submarine rescue system. more>>

At the end of last term, the Under 14 football
team clinched the Division One League title after beating Westhill Academy
6-4 in a very entertaining match. Scorers were Jay Cheyne (2), Daniel Scott,
Ryan Cameron, Nicol Christie and Ross Doig. The team will now be looking to
complete the league and cup double with a victory over Bankhead in the A.F.C.
Trophy final.

Under 13’s Football latest news After a shaky start to our Superleague
campaign this year which involved fairly heavy defeats to
Portlethen, Harlaw and Bankhead, the under 13’s squad has enjoyed
victories in our last two league games against the International
School ( away) and Oldmachar Academy at home.
Both games were won by 3-2 . Scorers in the game v. International
school were Sam MacGregor, Matthew Mitchell and Scott Banks (with a
last-gasp header). Scorers v. Oldmachar were Dylan McPhee, Ross
Smith and Kyle Brown.
These results are more of a reflection of the team’s ability levels
when we have a full squad to choose from and hopefully bode well for
next season. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the
senior boys who have given so much of their own time this year to
help coach the squad. They are Paul Flecher-Herd, Andrew ‘Sincy’
Sinclair, Shaun Cumming and Ashley Tosh. Thanks again guys, your
efforts have been greatly appreciated by the squad and by MrMacInnes.

Greyfriars have now won for two years in succession. Despite the fact that

The U14 football team beat Cults 4-1 last night in
what was essentially the U14 league decider. A Ryan Cameron
hat-trick and a Kai Ross goal clinched the win. Having been beaten
by Cults last week in the Sportsmans trophy final, the boys were
determined to put up a better performance. Mr Giles ( team manager)
commented, "That was possibly the boys best performance of the
season. The final score line actually flattered Cults." Hazlehead
now need to win or draw against Westhill on Saturday to clinch the
league. The U14s have already beaten Westhill 8-0 and 6-1 this
season, so here's hoping!

Good news and bad
news !
U14 football team beat Portlethen Academy
4-0 on Saturday. Scorers were Daniel Scott, Kai Ross 2 and Ryan
Cameron. This was a league game and keeps the Heid in the hunt for
the league title. Possible league decider against Cults on Wednesday
afterschool.
The seniors girls have been knocked out of the Senior Girls
Netball Scottish Cup, losing to Holyrood Secondary (Glasgow) by 35 -
25. The girls faced difficult circumstances which
knocked the wind out of their sails. However
the Hazlehead girls battled bravely and finished the game very
strongly. Huge credit goes to all girls involved for their attitude,
determination and team spirit. Well done.

Hazlehead Academy made its contribution to red
Nose Day when pupils were allowed to wear non uniform but especially
something red. Thanks to the efforts of pupils, over £1000 was raised to
help the people of Africa.

S5 and S6 students from Hazlehead said goodbye
to the Norwegian students who have been in Aberdeen for the last 10 days at
a traditional Scottish Ceilidh. The evening was greatly enjoyed by everyone

Over 60 pupils from Hazlehead attended the
Cyrenians Sleepout this year to raise funds for the Cyrenians charity. This
was the second attempt to hold the fund-raiser, the first effort having been
postponed due to extreme weather conditions. more>>

Interhouse competition 'Just a Minute' worked, before the pupils had a go

An examination with a difference took place this
evening when Hazlehead Academy's Intermediate " Dance course was assessed.
This was done through a public performance of various dance pieces which had
been choreographed by the pupils themselves. more>>

The more technically minded pupils had a chance
to gain points for their House in the Build-It Challenge this afternoon.
Teams of four had to design and build a model of a new bridge for the Forth. more>>

Three pupils from S2 have attended a series of
Mathematics Master classes at Aberdeen and Robert Gordon's Universities for
the past few months. They have discovered more about the maths involved in
car accidents, geometric shapes and human beauty as well as other topics.
The talks are open to S2 pupils every year and are a great fun event for all
involved.

There are two events coming up of interest to
pupils and parents. The first is the rearranged school ceilidh on
Friday 20th March, 8pm in the Carmelite Hotel,
Stirling Street. Tickets cost £20 and are available from the school office.
This event will also mark our farewell to the Norwegian students currently
in Scotland as part of our Norwegian exchange.
On Tuesday 31st March there will be a fund raising quiz night in Hazlehead
Golf Club. This will start at 7 pm and is for teams of four. Tickets, at a
cost of £2 for adults and £1 for teens, are available from the school
office.

of S1 took part in the Darwin Roadshow in the science dept. They attended
two workshops, a talk on diet and obesity, plus a presentation by Livewire
Theatre one genetics, called "The Lottery of Life". more>>

A group of nine Norwegian students and their
teacher left the snow of Norway behind when they arrived in the warm
sunshine of Aberdeen! The students are part of an exchange programme and the
Norwegian students will spend next week on a range of work placements. more>>

Three brave members of the Hillwalking Club
joined Mr Webster and Miss Smith for a challenging ascent of the Cairnwell
last Saturday. In spite of some very uncomfortable weather conditions the
team made the summit still with smiles on their faces before descending to
Flora's for tea and medals. Good effort. Let's hope Mr Webster remembers to
order some sunshine for the next walk on 29th March! more>>

for over £300 by pupils from an S4 Hospitality course who had organised a
coffee morning and raffle for staff. The charity were delighted with the

Under 14 Football Hazlehead Under 14
Football team came back from being 2-0 down against Inverurie
Academy on Saturday. They were playing in the A.F.C Trophy
Semi-final and fought back strongly to claim a victory in the tie.
Goals came from Jay Cheyne, Ryan Cameron and an own goal by
Inverurie.

Nine members of the Get
Knotted group had very productive session on the Summerhill rock wall on
Tuesday evening. Together with Mr Webster and their instructor, Mike Brian,
they enjoyed the challenges offered by new and more technical routes and
were introduced to the skills of abseiling. we are hoping very much to

Under 14 Football
Hazlehead Under 14
Football team were in action in the Sportsman's Trophy (City Cup) at
the weekend. The boys beat Westhill Academy 6-1 to reach the Final
in a convincing yet hard fought victory. Team manager Mr Giles was
particularly pleased to see six different players pitching in with
goals. Scorers were Kai Ross, Jay Cheyne, Scott McDougall, Cameron
Elphinstone, Scott Knox and Ryan Cameron

A group of six S2 pupils from Hazlehead Academy
have beaten off stiff competition from state and private schools from
Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to win the 2009 Go4SET competition. In
conjunction with mentors from Hazlehead partner, Amec, the five boys and one
girl designed an ecologically sound hotel. more>>

Congratulations go to former pupil Rachel Corsie
who has been called up to the Scotland Women's Senior Squad. Rachel enjoyed
considerable success at her football when still at school and it is
rewarding to see her continue to do well. She will be part of a squad of 18
players who will play in the Cyprus Cup.
We wish Rachel all the best in the competition and look forward to her
establishing herself in the Scotland team.

Scottish Hockey
North District Under 14 Mixed Indoor League
The School participated in the Scottish Hockey North District Under
14 Mixed Indoor League on Saturday 21 February 2009 at Linksfield.
The school was the only school team playing against 4 club teams.
They played 4 games in total, winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2,
with goals from Jamie Rodger and Ceara Barnes. The team came 4th in
the tournament. Our team comprised Thomas McIntosh-Prentice in
goals, Jamie Rodger, Niall Reid, Michal Burzyk, Elise Ewen and Ceara
Barnes. We also had help and support from Eoin Smith.

The charity CLAN are raising funds to build a
new centre nearer to the hospital and Roxburgh House, a facility for the
care of those suffering from cancer. The campaign is called CLAN 123 as it
gives 1 charity 2 years to raise 3 million pounds. The pupils in the 4th
year Hospitality course held a fund raising event to raise funds for this

Hazlehead Academy mountain
bike club recently received a generous donation of £350 from local
engineering company Welltonic. The money was given to the club to buy
cycling jackets. Club members chose the Montane Velo cycling jacket which is
waterproof and breathable but packs to about the same size as an apple
making it ideal for mountain biking. more>>

Although the snow of the
last week has provided a diversion for pupils, it has also caused a degree
of disruption to the school. Some pupils have also gone beyond the normal
boyish prank of throwing snowballs and have found out how to build a
survival shelter in the snow. more>>

The S4 Girls Badminton
competition took place today with Dunecht consolidating their narrow lead
over Bruce. Things are shaping up nicely for a very exciting finale to this
year's competition before we enter the month's break whilst Senior Students
sit their estimate examinations.

member of staff, Mrs Nicola Crawford, who has been a teacher in the
PE department for the last nine years. A pupil from each year group
presented Mrs Crawford with a framed photograph (kindly donated by
the Belividere Gallery of Rosemount) of some of the pupils she has

at best be described as 'fiercely competitive'. These teams were determined
to win maximum House points.
In the end, Dunecht and Greyfriars shared top place but it was enough to put

Two teams from Hazlehead Academy and
Aberdeen Grammar School met in a head to head clash to decide which
would come out as the top Entrepreneurs.
The competition arose from the course that students were following
on Entrepreneurship which is delivered in the school by Robert
Gordon University lecturer Alison Bruce. Congratulations to the

Steve King from AMEC
was in school today speaking to S3, 4, 5, 6 pupils about the Trainee
Designer Programme offered by AMEC. The programme is a 2 year
opportunity for anyone with minimum of HNC who wants a career in
design draughtsmanship. It is an alternative route to becoming an
engineer in oil and gas.
The visit was part of the link Hazlehead has with Amec and some of
the students were inspired by the career prospects on offer.
U16 Indoor Hockey
- The league games were suspended on Saturday, for the exciting
North District U16 Indoor Cup competition. A huge well done to the
boys' team who came 3rd in the competition. First and second spots
going to the previously mentioned Bon Accord MBC A and B teams.
Congratulations to Jack Mearns who scored against both of these
teams.

today participating in training for gaining a Sports Leader UK
qualification. Working towards their Level 1 award in Sports Leaders
they found themselves facing a number of interesting challenges! more>>

and S3 pupils visited Dr Alan Owen at The Robert Gordon University
to learn more about sustainable energy. The pupils got to see
exactly what it is and how Scotland could be using it in the future.
They were also given a tour of the engineering labs and shown that
Engineering is all about problem solving and what it would be like

Some members of
Hazlehead's hockey club participated in the first weekend of the
North District U16 boys' indoor hockey league at Linksfield on
Saturday. Despite this being their first competitive indoor fixture,
they all had fun, represented the school well and fought hard
against the much older and stronger sides - Bon Accord MBC A and B
teams. This coming weekend they will face both teams again and also
Granite City Wanderers. Well done boys and good luck for your next
matches.

The football Under-14 squad have been in action again
against Dyce Academy in the league. They emerged 7-1 winners despite
some battling play by Dyce. The boys had a point to prove however
after their shock exit from the Scottish Cup. Scorers were Kai Ross
(2), Daniel Scott, Jay Cheyne, Ryan Cameron and 2 own goals.

sadness that we must report the death of former Assistant and Depute Rector
at Hazlehead Academy, In order to allow staff to attend her funeral, the

Pupils following the Higher Performance PE
course are following a 12 week block of curling at Aberdeen Curl in
Sheddocksley.
This is a special course
organised through the Active schools initiative. Although typically
associated with a slightly older generation, the Hazlehead youngsters have
really taken to the sport and are reported to be greatly enjoying it. more>>

Yes, its Health week at Hazlehead which
includes instruction from ex-army PE instructors Norman and AJ from Storm
Leisure. They have been a huge hit with our pupils who have appreciated the

concert to a capacity audience in the Assembly Theatre. The choir, orchestra, saxophone

A group of pupils
recently took part in a walk to
Creag nam Ban (the Witch's Hill) above Abergeldie Castle. With
a good forecast and more than a sprinkling of snow in the Upper Dee
Valley, the hillwalkers headed for Creag nam Ban, or the Witch's
Hill (527m) yesterday. The hilltop is reputed to be the site of the
burning of Kittie Rankin, whose ghost now haunts Abergeldie Castle
which lies at the foot of the hill. more>>

A group of S2 pupils are
taking part in in the Go4set Project which focuses on alternative
electricity sources. The pupils have to create an "Eco-Hotel" that has a
below average carbon footprint. To do this the hotel has to be powered by
renewable energy.
To help with their research
into a project such as this, the pupils recently visited AMEC, along with Mr
MacBeath, to see how a company such as this tries to reduce their carbon

Hazlehead's Netball teams have just had a
good week. The Senior Netball team beat St. Margarets 21-15 and
Aberdeen Grammar School 45-11. The Juniors were also in action and
beat Aberdeen Grammar 25-13. Well done to all the girls taking part.

End last night " The greatly anticipated ensemble debut of staff from a
prestigious north east secondary school had a rapturous reception in the
West end last night. One octogenarian said " It was lovely to see these
young folk singing their hearts out, it set me up nicely for my power nap!"

Pupils in S1 and S3 have been photographed individually by Tempest - the
school photographers. Pupils in S5 and S6 have also had group photographs
taken as well as S6 being photographed individually. Information about the

A letter of thanks from The New Hope Trust has been
received following the annual Shoe Box Appeal.
As always, a number of individual pupils and classes have
collected shoeboxes filled with essential and not so essential items
to make Christmas a happier time for people in Romania. more>>

Heavy snowfalls have not
affected a group of S6 Hazlehead
students currently undertaking a weeks work placement in Norway.
These range from working with a local newspaper to placements in a
primary school and even working with a magician! Our students have recently
been enjoying traditional Norwegian Christmas food such as cod soaked in
caustic soda! One for the chemists perhaps. Our budding reporters
working with newspaper Østlandets Blad
in local town Skihave produced a report for us which can be found

S2 pupils from Hazlehead
Academy have taken part in an Engineering challenge as part of this year’s
Techfest. Pupils were asked to design a solution that would allow food and
equipment to be transported up a mountainside. The added difficulty was that
there had been a land slide so nothing could move or touch the side of the
mountain. Although they didn't win anything the pupils produced an excellent
solution to the task they had been set. more>>

The Interhouse competition has continued with the S2 Girls
Basketball. Marischal and Greyfriars shared the top place which has
allowed Bruce back into the lead with a one point advantage over
Dunecht. All the other Houses are close behind however. more>>

have been in action again
over
the weekend - this time at the YE Fayre in the Music Hall. They did
exceptionally well! They came second overall with Annaliese Johnson winning

Hazlehead's U-14 football team have
crashed out of the Scottish Cup. In their game on Saturday they were
beaten 5-1 by a very determined Peterhead side. The only goal scored
by last year's Scottish Champions was from Jordan Watt. Never mind,
there's always next year.

lead in the Interhouse competition as a result of their win in the Sudoko
Challenge. There are obviously some Sudoko geniuses amongst our pupils given
the high standard of some of the entries which were completed in a high

The Academy's PTA held a
Christmas Fayre in the school Assembly Theatre this evening. It was very
well attended with shoppers snapping up many of the Christmas bargains to be
had. The Academy's Young Enterprise team, Fabeco,
were also there with their eco friendly shopping bags selling like
hot-cakes!

Hazlehead received a visit last Thursday from current rugby internationals
Rory Lawson and Ally Hogg ahead of Scotland's victory over Canada on
Saturday. The visit was designed to raise the profile of rugby in school and

toys, clothing, toiletries etc. were collected and boxed so that
they could be taken to orphans in Romania by the New Hope Trust

Mrs Hill, Mrs Milne, 1BN and members of
the Book Club which meets at lunchtime on Tuesdays, attended the
Royal Mail Book Awards ceremony in the Beach Ballroom on Tuesday.
Since the start of term the club and some of Mrs Milne’s class have
been reading the titles short-listed for the Award and have taken
part in voting for the winning book. more>>

After five intensive 'google' searching
the winners of the Google Challenge have emerged. Run by our school
librarians, Marischal and Dunecht emerged as the top IT wizards and shared

Final - SPORTS NEWS
Hazlehead's U-14 football team have
made it through to the semi-final of the Sportsman Trophy. A fine
performance saw them beat Bridge of Don Academy 4-1. Scorers were
Ryan Cameron (2), Jordan Watt and Kai Ross. This maintains there
100% record and means the team is now in the semi-finals of both
local cups.

FabECO,
Hazlehead's Young Enterprise company, had their stall at the Inverurie
Christmas fayre today (Sunday), and did exceptionally well! Their
products (eco-friendly jute and cotton bags) were so successful, that
they sold out within an hour, and took 15 orders! They also won two
prizes: Best Product and Overall Winners! Well done to everyone (Annaliese,
Lynsey, Aimee, Kenneth, Eoin) who turned up and made this event the
massive success that it turned out to be.

The S3 Interhouse Girls Basketball competition
took place at lunchtime today and what a cracking event it turned out to be.
Some strong performances from all teams saw some very exciting games.
Dunecht took full points to close the gap on Bruce once again. All Houses
are still in contention with last year's winners, Greyfriars, currently in
last place but that could all change with only a quarter of the competitions

‘Maths in the Pipeline’
is a full day of workshops and challenge for 15 year olds (S4) designed
to give pupils the
opportunity to both
enjoy and explore some practical uses of maths in the oil and gas
industry while developing
their team working
skills.
Pupils, nominated by
their teachers and interested in attending, are allocated to teams for
the day. The pupils work
with the support of a
teacher and industry professionals. more>>

Theatre Company's production is the hilarious production - Teechers. Tickets are now on sale from the school office priced at £6 for an
adult and £4 for a child/concession. Please note that this production is
unsuitable for children under the age of 10 years. Performances run from Tuesday

A group of pupils are introduced to some Chinese
characters by the Academy's newest member of staff, Ping Lin.
Hazlehead Academy has both a junior and a senior Chinese club, started by
languages teacher Mrs Weir. The schools link with China has now been greatly
enhanced by its being chosen as a Confucius Hub School with a classroom
dedicated to the teaching of Chinese language and culture. Ping Lin is seen
here with some pupils at the junior club.

On Wednesday 29th
October a group of S1 and S2 Gàidhlig pupils went out on a heritage
fact-finding trip to Braemar. The pupil's guide was an acknowledged expert
in this field, Mrs Allison Grant (some of you might remember her as the
Gàidhlig teacher at Hazlehead
Academy in 2006-7) We were also accompanied by Màiri Morley, the Gaelic
Development Officer for Aberdeen city Council. more>>

Hazlehead Academy has been awarded a Third Green
Flag.
Following a highly successful ECO inspection yesterday, the school has
been successful in attaining a prestigious Third Green Flag. This award is
in recognition of our sustained efforts in addressing issues of
environmental concern and embedding environmental awareness and education in
our formal and informal curriculum. The ECO inspectors were impressed by the
standard of presentations made to them by a number of groups of pupils
during their introductory session and subsequent tour of the school.

Marischal came top in the S3 Boys Basketball
competition to achieve their first full points of the current competition.
Some close games meant that there was a very even share of the points. As a
result, Bruce have opened up their lead slightly and the win by Marischal
has seen them pull themselves back into the race. more>>

A group of Hazlehead pupils competed in
the 2008 Scottish Schools Biathlon Championships last weekend and
came away with a substantial haul of medals! There were a number of
fine performances from pupils including a number who gained 1st

Halloween on Friday evening for the students Halloween disco. The
aim was to
raise funds for their Senior Prom next year and some of the

today - the S4 Girls Basketball. A strong performance from Dunecht saw them

The end of term was slightly different today
with the pupils taking part in a fund raising sponsored walk in Hazlehead
Park. Several days of very wet weather left it very muddy underfoot although
otherwise it was warm and very pleasant. We apologise to the many mums (or
dads) who are washing muddy clothes this evening! more>>

the attention of all parents to the consultation exercise being conducted by
Aberdeen City Council. This is seeking the views of parents, pupils and
teachers on the reconfiguration of the school week which broadly seeks to
