7th October 2008 Hazlehead academy had a visitor all the way from China today. Prof Wen Zheng from the University of South China is on a 3 month study visit at the School of Education of the University of Aberdeen.  He paid a visit to Hazlehead Academy and Hazlehead Primary School to see Scottish schools in action.  IOne of his main interests is to learn about the Scottish education system, especially the Curriculum for Excellence and the introduction of the Confucius Classroom at the Academy. 
 
1st October 2008 A group of pupils took part in a hill walk last weekend. Lewis Eden of S3 has been good enough to put together a report on what sounds like quite a challenging expedition!

Hazlehead Academy U-14 team were in action against Dyce Academy recently. After a fairly subdued start they eventually found there form and won 5-1 against a battling Dyce side.

15th September 2008 A group of twelve pupils and two teachers departed the school on Friday the 5th of September for a mountain biking weekend. We left at almost half four – an hour after the intended departure time! Before we left, a few teachers had wished us a good weekend.

15th September 2008 A group of Hazlehead pupils took part in an expedition to one of the more unusual parts of Europe during the summer holidays. The small but enthusiastic group of adventurers gathered at Aberdeen airport as the sun was just beginning to rise. Their destination was Croatia, their aim a challenging adventure and an opportunity to develop leadership and team skills.

8th September 2008 S3 Pupils - Duke of Edinburgh's Award - NEW BRONZE GROUP
There will be a meeting on Tuesday 16th September at 12.40 in G1 for all S3 pupils interested in finding out more about doing the Award. There will be a short presentation and then a chance for you to ask questions. You will be given some information and next steps should you decide to take up this opportunity. Low cost this year due to the availability of more qualified staff. All welcome but please be on time. Don't miss out!

5th September 2008

Channel Five have announced their production for this year. The Academy's own theatre group will be presenting the hilarious comedy 'TEECHERS' by John Godber. Teechers, described by one critic as 'serious comedy' takes a biting satirical look at today's education system from the point of view of a group of school leavers. Rehearsals are well underway with the cast already laughing their socks off, wondering if they will ever see their own 'TEECHERS' in the same light again.

The production is scheduled for early November - watch this space for more news.

5th September 2008 Four S6 pupils recently competed in the highly competitive world of the oil industry. Working with a budget of $200,000,000 they had the opportunity to explore and drill for oil - and ended up making more money than they ever dreamed of.

1st September 2008 Fifty S6 pupils have just returned from a weekend of outdoor challenges and Activities at the Abernethy Outdoor Centre. Pupils faced a whole range of challenges from an assault course on Friday evening through on-site challenges to activities such as gorge walking, canoeing and coasteering.  more>>

Congratulations go to two Hazlehead pupils who are now world champions! Sinead Bruce and Allan Davidson of S4 play drums in the school pipe band (along with Mr Giles) but also play for the Bucksburn and District Novice/juvenile Pipe Band. In the recent World Pipe Championships the Bucksburn band won the Under 18s category against 23 other bands. Congratulations to both pupils.

25th August 2008 A group of brave pupils spent a couple of days during their Summer holidays in the great outdoors undertaking a practice for their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Expedition. Two days of very steady rain did not dampen their enthusiasm which included camping in Glen Clova. IF you would like to find out more about the DofE scheme then speak with Mr Murray (Depute Rector),  Mrs Rutherford (computing) or Mr Webster (German).

25th August 2008 Pupils in S1 to S3 have been issued with the choices booklets for residential trips in June of 2009. A copy of this booklet can be found here>>.

Parents should note that the local and non-residential trip booklet for Activities Week 2009 will be issued later this term. Pupils can make a choice from either. Some photographs of last year's activities can be found here>>


 

22nd August 2008 A group of pupils from Hazlehead have signed up for the opportunity to take part in an award winning scheme designed to encourage pupils who wish to follow a career in the motor trade. Today they embarked on the second stage of the scheme by visiting Manor Oak, Aberdeen's Honda dealer situated in the Lang Stracht. more>>
 

 
26th June 2008 P7 pupils have just completed a three day secondary experience at Hazlehead Academy. As well as taking part in classes and meeting their classmates and teachers for next session, the pupils also enjoyed some special events such as a team building presentation by 5th Dimension.

22nd June 2008 Once again, our senior students are coming to the end of their school career,  For some, this is the last official school event they will be involved in. As always, the evening turned out to be a glamorous affair with the students being in fine form with the majority of boys in highland outfits and the girls in a variety of gowns and dresses - all looking stunning!

22nd June 2008 Last week saw the school participate in 'Bike Week'. Pupils were encouraged to use their bicycles (safely) to come to school as being both healthier and more environmentally friendly. We were also looking for unusual forms of transport and think that Mr Giles might be on a winner here. He claims to have travelled all the way to school on it but we're not sure.

       The Green & Blue Final  -  SPORTS NEWS        

Hazlehead Academy pupils have done well in the Aberdeen Schools' Golf Championships for 2008. Scott Main finished 2nd in the scratch competition of his section. Although Ryan Dick did not receive a prize he did have the lowest scratch score of all the Hazlehead pupils, scoring a commendable 75. Well done to all the boys who took part.

12th June 2008 The achievements and successes of top performing school pupils and staff were celebrated at the 2008 Children and Young People's Services Awards 2008. This glittering event was held at the Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre and modelled along the lines of the annual 'Oscars' ceremony. more>>
 
9th June 2008

Two groups of our new S5 pupils successfully completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award practice expedition last weekend when they walked for three days between Glen Feshie and the Linn of Dee. Thanks to Mr Mair and a trailer from Aberdeen Mountain Rescue Team the logistical challenges were met and after a very wet start, the teams were then fortunate to have warm and sunny weather for their venture; doubly so as there was an accompanying breeze to keep the midges at bay!

       The Green & Blue Final  -  SPORTS NEWS        

Hazlehead Academy has won the Aberdeen School's Golf League Final. After a very close match between two very talented teams, Hazlehead beat Robert Gordon's College 2-1. The victory was set up by the 'Little and Large' pairing of Grant Ross and Fraser McDonald who secured a 3&2 win.

6th June 2008

Students returning to S5 and S6 at Hazlehead Academy benefit from a week long conference designed to built their personal skills and prepare them for their role as senior students.

 

The week long series of activities concluded with a day out at Bridge of Don Barracks where they were able to listen to a Bruce Willis lookalike singing!

The U-13 football team were introduced to the Lord Provost, Peter Stephen, recently. The team, which has gained outstanding success this season were presented with mementoes by the Lord Provost.

As Beijing prepares to host the 2008 Olympics, pupils at Hazlehead Academy are being provided with a fascinating insight into the heritage and contemporary culture of China. A day was organised for Hazlehead pupils as part of a China Now in Scotland (CNIS) initiative to raise awareness and understanding among Scottish schoolchildren and create links between the two nations.

Hazlehead U-13 boys took part in the Coca-Cola 7s Final at the Hearts FC ground in Edinburgh at the weekend. The boys won one game, drew one and lost one and so did not get through to the final. Their only lost match was to the eventual winners though.

Thanks to Nikki Lebedis' involvement with last year's Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition, AMEC kindly donated money which has been used to purchase two radios for use during mountain activities where communication between staff supervising groups can become difficult. A very generous deal given to us by Enterprise Marine, enabled us to acquire ICOM sets which will benefit groups walking and expeditioning in wild country.

Mrs Scott, Principal Teacher Art, and Mrs Barnes, Science teacher, have been working collaboratively on an Art/Science Project called ‘Design a Fish’ with Class 1CR.  Throughout, both teachers have been working closely with the Local Authority Curriculum Support Team, in particular Jim Scott from Expressive Arts and Seema Sircar from Science. Lessons were filmed at all stages to show how pupils and teachers adapted to this cross-curricular way of working.

Jimmy Calderwood threatened with the sack! Reliable sources have informed us that Willie Miller has tried to persuade multi-cup-winning manager Gary Giles to join the Dons on a long term contract. Speaking to our inside source, Miller admitted that the managerial skills of Giles were on a par with Walter Smith or Gordon Strachan. Apparently Giles turned down the offer saying that his chances of winning trophies in the future were better with his current team!

       The Green & Blue Final  -  SPORTS NEWS        

Hazlehead U-13 football team have won TWO finals in the space of a week. Last week they won the SSFA North Regional Final by beating Peterhead Academy 2-0. Tonight they won the BIG ONE! Yes, Hazlehead U-13 football team has won the Scottish Cup by beating Auchinleck Academy 1-0. Despite missing a penalty and socking up a lot of pressure in the second half, the defence stood firm and Cameron Elphinstone's first half goal was enough to see the team through to victory.

12th May 2008 Hazlehead Academy and its associated primary schools of Airyhall, Fernielea, Hazlehead and Kingsford are hosting a joint information evening for parents of P7 to S2 pupils.  The evening will take place on Wednesday, 21 May from 7-9pm at the Academy.

9th May 2008 Hazlehead Academy was visited by a group looking at good practice linked to Scotland's 'Curriculum for Excellence'. The Academy was chosen for a visit due to the examples of innovative work which is currently underway in the school.

30th April 2008

On Friday 25th April 2008, Mrs. Lobban and Mrs. Addison took 2BN to see an exhibition about the history of Aberdeen newspapers currently running in the Central Library. In addition, 2BN had completed a 'newspaper' project with Mrs. Lobban, and their work was given pride of place in a small display in the Children's Library section. The whole morning was enjoyed very much by staff and pupils. 2BN were a very receptive audience for the talks given by the library staff at Central Library. The class showed themselves to be a credit to Hazlehead Academy in their behaviour.

 

 
30th April 2008 S5/6 Intermediate 2 Biology students recently spent a day at Edinburgh Zoo. The Education Centre at the zoo gave the students a lesson on Evolution, which ties in to the Biology curriculum. Highlights of the day included the penguins parade, learning about the evolution of primates, old- and new-world monkeys, a visit to the newly built Budongo trail where the chimpanzees are now accommodated and dinner at Pizza Hut!
 

 
17th April 2008 Hazlehead was the scene of a dreadful crime this afternoon with the murder of Mr McGarvey the biology teacher. Found in B1, a group of S1 and S2 pupils set about solving the crime using their scientific skills!

11th April 2008 The final match of the Hazlehead Lympics took place today with the staff versus pupils badminton match. A guest appearance by Ginger Spice for the teachers proved just the encouragement they needed to beat the pupils and salvage some pride.

10th April 2008 Hazlehead S4 pupil Sam Mitchell has been given the opportunity to become a vehicle technician through Honda’s official apprenticeship programme after he excelled during a recent work placement. Sam is one of 10 pupils at Hazlehead Academy who were recognised last night at a presentation ceremony held by Manor Oak Honda after they each successfully completed work placements as part of the government’s Determined To Succeed initiative.

9th April 2008 Following the traditions of all good mountaineering clubs, the Hillwalking Club sallied forth on Good Friday to attempt the ascent of Carn an t-sagairt Mor, a Munro lying a little to the South West of Lochnagar. A group of nine staff and pupils braved the challenging weather forecast, laden down with warm clothing, food and winter equipment.

21st March 2008 Hazlehead Academy has been awarded a trophy by the Aberdeen Cyrenians for the most money raised by a school at the 2008 'Sleepout' which took place in January. 117 pupils and staff took part and raised a total of £3300. Hazlehead Academy is the first Aberdeen school to win the award.

21st March 2008 AMEC's partnership with Hazlehead was recognised recently at the Institute of Directors (Scotland) Directors of the Year Awards. AMEC Chief Operating Officer, Neil Bruce, was honoured with the Institute's 'Determined to Succeed Director Award for Developing Young People'. The award was as a result of the work AMEC has undertaken with Hazlehead Academy.

21st March 2008 A group of S3 and S4 Gaelic students have recently returned from a very successful and enjoyable study trip to Inverness and the Isle of Skye. The purpose of the trip was to immerse pupils in Gaelic throughout the trip and enabling them to improve their communications skills.

18th March 2008 Pupils from Hazlehead Academy created their own version of the X Factor recently. In order to raise funds for one of their chosen charities, the Charities Committee decided to hold a talent contest. Fifteen acts performed for the judges with acts being crited by our very own version of Simon Cowell

6th March 2008 On Friday 29th February six S2 pupils went to the beach ballroom to compete in this years Go4SET challenge.  They have spent the last three months researching renewable energy and investigating how their innovative ideas could save the school money and make it a more eco-friendly school.  They worked closely with mentors from both AMEC and Prospect, drawing on industry experience and advice.

6th March 2008 Hazlehead Academy has entered into a partnership with The Hilton Aberdeen Treetops. The aim of the partnership, created under the Determined to Succeed scheme, will provide valuable input into the curriculum at Hazlehead.

3rd March 2008 A group of six Norwegian students have arrived in Aberdeen for the second leg of the Norwegian work experience scheme. A group of Hazlehead S6 students visited Norway in November and they are now hosting the Norwegian students as they undertake a week's work experience in Aberdeen.

3rd March 2008 Hazlehead pupils have raised the magnificent sum of £3347 for the Aberdeen Cyrenians. Over 100 pupils took part in the 'Sleepout' in order to raise funds for the local charity which helps look after the homeless.

11th January 2008 Health promoting activities played a big part this week at Hazlehead Academy. As part of its drive to promote healthier lifestyles amongst it pupils the PE, Home Economics and a number of other departments took part in a week of special events.

Unfortunately Craigievar could not get a team together and so gained no points towards the championship. 28th January 2008 Two S1 classes from Hazlehead celebrated the work of Scot's poet Robert Burns by having a Burns' Breakfast today.

Pupils from 1GL and 1GK invited staff along to hear them celebrate Burns life and works though there were a few changes from the traditional refreshment served up on such occasions!

26th January 2008 Hazlehead pupils again took part in this year's Sleepout in aid of the Cyrenian's charity. Our biggest ever number of pupils were by far the biggest representation of any school there - which included schools from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. A number of individuals and other groups were represented.

20th December 2007 The House Captains had their opportunity to face the questions in their very own Tutor Team Challenge. In a very close competition with only a few points separating the first and last team, Dunecht's knowledge of Christmas hits was enough to see them edge in front.

18th December 2007 The Music Department gave its traditional Christmas concert this evening. The Choir, orchestra, saxophone quartet and various soloists were were joined by the pipe band, a folk band and a pupil inspired close harmony group called Senior Act.

14th December 2007 Four S1 pupils from 1BN gave up their lunchtimes for two months to participate in the Shell Enterprise and Science 2007 Challenge. Even better is that they won the competition!

14th December 2007 An S1 pupil who joined Hazlehead's S1 from Quarryhill Primary school in the Summer, has recently won the British Under-12 Rhythmic Gymnastics title in the British championships in Stoke-on-Trent.

Hazlehead Academy's U13's have won yet another of their matches, this time against Bankhead Academy with a 6-2 score line. Their 100% record still stands, the scorers this time being Nicol Christie with a hat-trick and goals by Scott Knox, Jordan Watt and Kai Ross.

14th December 2007 On Thursday 29th November the S2 Go4SET team took to the hills to learn more about renewable energy to aid their research for this years challenge.  Mackies of Scotland have recently completed their construction of three 45-metre wind turbines.

Oh dear! Looks like someone's name is going in the ref's book. The Seniors recently played Inverurie Academy in the J M Low Cup Quarter Finals and won 10-2. Scott MacKay scored 3 goals in the first half and was promptly substituted by 'manager of the week' Mr Fraser who claimed to be keeping him rested for the upcoming Scottish Cup match. We wish the ladswell in that important match.

In the Aberdeen Secondary Netball League, Hazlehead Academy beat Ellon by 32-1 - quite a convincing win!

Why is this group of Hazlehead pupils standing around in freezing cold Lerwick? The answer - Hazlehead Academy's Senior Netball Team recently made their way to Lerwick in Shetland to play a Scottish Cup match. more>>

Nearer home, Hazlehead U-13 football team recently beat Kincorth 7-2. Although winning they finally conceded a goal, two in fact. Well done to all the team.

 
10th December 2007 Mrs Lobban of the English department is seen here with some pupils from 1GL. As part of their English lessons, the pupils took part in some work of a cross-department flavour. Flavour was the order of the day as the group set about making chocolate truffles, some being presented to Mr Wood, Rector,  and Mr Robertson, Depute Rector, to enjoy with their morning coffee!

7th December 2007 The S2 team of Verity, Rachel, Rory and Jazmine won the S2 Tutor Team Challenge. Pictured with their House Captains and Mrs Simpson their Guidance Teacher, they gained Craigievar a valuable 10 points.

4th December 2007 The Interhouse competition continued today with some very competitive matches in the S2 Girls Basketball competition. Some fine performances saw Marischal and Dunecht share the top points.

29th November 2007 Five Hazlehead students have almost completed their week long work placements at a number of locations near the Norwegian capital of Oslo. One of the final events of this leg of the exchange was a traditional Norwegian meal.

25th November 2007 A group of Hazlehead Pupils recently landed in the Norwegian airport of Torp as they started their week long work experience in a range of placements from a dentist to a police station! Five S6 students are taking part (not shown in the photograph is Head Boy Andrew Lawrie who joined the group after helping the school football team to win their Scottish Cup 3rd round match by saving a penalty!).

19th November 2007 As Part of the Senior Student Conference in June this year, S5 and S6 pupils had to complete a number of challenges. One of these was to produce a section of a larger eco-Banner. The completed banner is now on display in the school library.
 
16th November 2007 Channel 5 Theatre Company's 2007 production of the rock opera 'Tommy' gets underway this week. Based around the story of a boy who is so traumatised when he witnesses the death of his mother's lover that he loses the power of sight, hearing and speech. Despite this, he finds he has a remarkable gift for playing the pinball machines at his local youth club.

       The Green & Blue Final  -  SPORTS NEWS        

Thirty-five Hazlehead pupils competed in the Scottish Schools Road Relay Championships last weekend in Grangemouth. Our first year boys finished 3rd - the top performing state school. Congratulations to Connor Adams, Ryan Cameron and Sam Stephen.
In football our U16 girls have qualified for the finals of the 7-a-side Scottish Tournament in Glasgow after beating Banchory Academy 6-0 and Drawing 1-1 against Kincorth. Our U13's Reserve team recently drew 8-8 against Bridge of Don Academy.
On Monday the Junior netball team beat Dyce Academy 13-6.
 
31st October 2007 The S4 Girls Basketball competition took place this week and as a result, Greyfriars House have increased their lead slightly. All the matches were very competitive with the girls desperately keen to score points for their House.

The Academy's trampoline squad has been in action during October and took part in the National Qualifiers. A number of pupils did very well including Stacey Brown - gold, Megan Simpson - gold, Lynsey Morgan - bronze and Kirsty Middleton - gold.
Rebecca Houston has qualified for the Scottish National Championships in November.
 
31st October 2007 Pupils from the Academy's Hill walking Club made an expedition to Mount Keen earlier this month. Under the expert guidance of Mr Webster from Modern Languages they had an excellent day out with a good attendance. Photograph courtesy of Harriet McRae of S4.

The U13s football team have recorded yet another win - this time against Northfield Academy in the League. Winning by 7 goals to nil, the team have now scored an extraordinary number of goals yet still had none against. Mr Giles of the PE dept was keen to have pointed out that there are no trophies in the cabinet yet! Well done to all the boys for maintaining such a high standard with an excellent start to the season.
 
3rd October 2007 A group of pupils recently took part in a Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award Assessment Expedition. The group had to contend with rain, midges and swollen streams but all survived!

3rd October 2007 The first Hillwalking Club walk of the school year took place on Saturday 30th September and saw a mixed group of 14 staff and pupils heading up Lochnagar. The twelve mile round trip was completed by a cheery group in superb weather in a very respectable seven hours. The three S1 pupils did particularly well on this, their first outing with the school especially when beset by Loch Muick's ravenous midges!

A lot has been happening on the football field lately. The U13s beat Mintlaw 13-0 - Ryan Cameron (4), Scott McDougall (4),Daniel Scott (2), Nicol Christie, Sam Stephen, Kai Ross (1). Special thanks to Head Boy Andrew Lawrie who did a superb job refereeing the match. The U13's have also beaten Harlaw 8-0 with goals by Daniel Scott (2), Ryan Cameron (3) and Scott McDougall, Nicol Christie and Kai Ross (1). The U13s have now scored 60 goals with none conceded!
 
The U15s team beat in the League by 5 goals to 3 with goals by Callum Dunbar (3), Chris Hood (1) and Gregg Cheyne (1) Cults

The U13s football team have recorded a win against Gordon Schools, Huntly beating them 0-9  in the Esso Trophy (regional) and Scottish Cup double header. Goals were by Ryan Cameron (3), Daniel Scott (2),  Sam Stephen (1), Jordan Watt (1) Kai Ross (1) and David Stage (1). In keeping a clean sheet the keeper managed to save a penalty!

The U15s (opposite) have beaten Robert Gordons College 5-2 in the U15 League with scorers being Jae Robertson (2), Grant Smith (2), and  Ben McGregor.
 
26th September 2007 Following the S5/6 Football competition the lead has been snatched by Greyfriars - though only by one point over Bruce. The competition saw Dunecht stage something of a comeback by taking 10 points. more>>
 
19th September 2007 Hazlehead Academy was visited by both an astronaut and a cosmonaut today. Organised by Careers Scotland, the visit coincided with the Association of Space Explorers Annual Planetary Congress being held in Edinburgh. S1 pupils were intrigued to hear about the problems experienced by those undertaking space flight when normally mundane tasks such as going to the toilet, washing your hair or sleeping have a whole new set of problems!
Pupils were spoken to by Astronaut Rick Hieb (USA) and Cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko (Russia) (right).

       The Green & Blue Final  -  SPORTS NEWS        

The U14s football team have recorded another win against St. Machar by a Hazlehead team. This time they beat the opposition 3-2 with goals from Barry Riley (2) and Stuart Morrison (1) in the league.

The U13s also played against St. Machar in the league and beat them 13-0! Goals were by Scott McDougall (3), Ryan Cameron (3), Daniel Scott (2), Nicol Christie (2), Sam Stephen (1), Jordan Watt (1) and Cameron Elphinstone (1). Team manager, Mr Giles, Principal Teaxher of PE, said he was delighted with the start to the season. The team have now scored 30 goals with none against. Praise must go to the defenders and goalkeeper for this excellent record.

The U15s have beaten Dyce 4-0 with scorers being Jae Robertson,  Ben McGregor, Callum Dunbar and Gregg Cheyne. Next Wednesday they will be playing Robert Gordons College.

The U16s have played Grammar and came out with a very creditable 3-3 draw. Next Wednesday they will have a home game against Torry Academy.

Hazlehead Academy sends its congratulations to former pupil Laura Harrow (left) who is to play the lead role of Princess Jasmine in this year's pantomime at His Majesty's Theatre. In choosing Laura, Executive Producer Michael Harrison said "Laura shone through". The Evening Express described her as "a young teen with a belting voice."

Laura is seen opposite in Hazlehead Academy's Channel 5 production of Blood Brothers whilst a pupil at the school. We send Laura our congratulations.

Hazlehead teams have continued their winning run in the field of football. On Saturday the U15s played Bankhead in the League and won 6-0. Goals were scored by Grant Smith (2), Conner Knowles (2), Callum Dunbar (1) and Jae Robertson (1).

The U13s saw action in the Scottish Cup 1st round. They defeated Aberdeen Grammar School by a resounding 12 goals to nil! Goals were scored by Ryan Cameron (4), Kai Ross (2), Daniel Scott (2), Connor Adam (1), Jordan Watt (1), Nicol Christie (1) and an own goal by the Grammar.
Well done to all those playing.

Hazlehead football teams have been enjoying some early success this season. The U15's beat St. Machar 7-0 (Jay Robertson scored 4 goals. U16's beat St. Machar 3-2.
 

The seniors played their first round Scottish cup match this evening against Kemnay and won 4-3, Ryan Dick scoring a hat trick.  The under 14's won 6-0 against Torry in the first round of the Aberdeen local cup.
 

Kirsty Mine in 5th year has been selected for the U17's east of Scotland netball squad and has been selected to trial for Scotland this weekend in Glasgow.  Only two girls from Aberdeen have been selected for the trials.
 

10th September 2007 Rock band Estrella wowed Hazlehead pupils at a free lunchtime concert today. The band, originally from Wick, won the Scottish Battle of the Bands two years ago before turning professional.
The band are performing to raise awareness of cancers which affect men. The group are promoting the cancer charity UCAN.

7th September 2007 Four S5 Hazlehead pupils have shown they have what it takes to become high flyers in the oil industry.

They recently took part in the OilSim 2007 competition held at the Robert Gordon University's Garthdee campus. Competing against around 30 teams from across Grampian, they were leading the competition until the closing stages when they were pipped into second place.

5th September 2007 The Hazlehead pipe band - small but successful - was asked to perform this week at the VIP Gala Dinner for the 2007 Offshore Europe Oil and Gas exhibition and Conference.

Attended by a host of top business people from industry and commerce, the Hazlehead group had the honour of piping in guests as they arrived and piping in the top table as guests sat down for the dinner.

5th September 2007 Hazlehead Senior Boys football team came back from a 1 goal deficit to beat St Machar 2-1. All the action from Hazlehead's point of view happened in the last 10 minutes.

4th September 2007 A group of pupils have become the first group to embark on an innovative link with the motor trade in Aberdeen. A group of 11 boys and 1 girl today visited Manor Oak (Honda) in the Lang Stracht.

3rd September 2007 Fifty S6 pupils have just returned from a weekend of outdoor challenges and Activities at the Abernethy Outdoor Centre. Pupils faced a whole range of challenges from an assault course on Friday evening through on-site challenges to activities such as gorge walking, canoeing and coasteering.  more>>
 

 
3rd September 2007 Hazlehead Academy has been awarded the Silver Award by the Scotland's Health at Work scheme.  We are the first  Aberdeen city school to have been given this prestigious award and one of only a handful of  Scottish Secondary  schools to have achieved this.

Our Health Promotion Group continues to raise health and safety awareness, and provide information and help for all staff  in the workplace.  The Group is now working towards achieving the Gold Award.

24th August 2007 Abernethy Weekend
A large number of S6 pupils will be enjoying a challenge weekend at the
Abernethy Trust Centre in Nethybridge next weekend. This is one of the highlights of the school calendar and always a thoroughly enjoyable event.

3rd July 2007 Mr. Norman Binnie, consultant surgeon at ARI, came in to Hazlehead Academy on 3rd July to give an introduction to keyhole surgery and demonstrate the laparoscopic surgery simulator to a group of S5/6 pupils, made up mainly from the Higher Human Biology and Advanced Higher Biology classes.

3rd July 2007 A mixed group of S5 and S6 pupils set out on Saturday 30th June to undertake their Silver DofE practice expedition. Starting at Victoria Bridge, just outside Braemar, they walked into Derry Lodge, where they camped for the next two nights. Unfortunately the rain came on mid Saturday afternoon and the group's waterproofs got a good workout. as if that weren't enough they also had to endure hordes of hungry midges determined to make a meal of them.

29th June 2007 P7 pupils from a large number of primary schools have just completed their 3 day 'Hazlehead Experience'. Whilst at the Academy they followed a full timetable as well as experiencing some special events. The pupils opposite are looking at a tower they built during a presentation by '5th Dimension'.

28th June 2007 Hazlehead Academy has scooped the top prize in this year's Children and Young People's Services Awards. Of the eighteen awards, Hazlehead Academy took three including the John Stodter trophy for Outstanding Achievement.

11th June 2007 A group of girls from Hazlehead Academy competed in the finals of the Coca-Cola 7's competition at the weekend. Having joined the competition along with 1000 other teams they did tremendously well to reach the finals which gave them the opportunity to play on the famous Hampden turf.

10th June 2007 Students returning to S5 and S6 at Hazlehead Academy benefit from a week long conference designed to built their personal skills and prepare them for their role as senior students.  The week began on Monday 4th June with a variety of sessions aimed to expand the horizons of the new S5 and S6.

7th June 2007 Congratulations go to Hazlehead pupil Rachel Corsie who has won the Green Final best female Player for 2006-2007.
Rachel has won nineteen caps for Scotland in her short international career and has combined this with her studies at school and her role as a House Captain for Craigievar House.

 
1st June 2007 Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond praised Hazlehead pupils at the Education-Industry Dinner jointly hosted by Hazlehead Academy and Amec. He described their performances at the dinner as "incredibly entertaining" and the 180 guests at the dinner heartily agreed with him.

30th May 2007 Almost 200 pupils and parents gathered in the schools Assembly Theatre today for the S5/6 Leavers Ceremony. Following a farewell speech by Mr Wood, the Academy's Rector, pupils were presented with their Records of Achievement. Parents, staff and pupils then enjoyed tea and cakes in the staffroom.
We wish all our leavers the very best in their future studies and careers.

 
29th May 2007 Aberdeen University’s WORD Festival invited secondary school pupils to enter a TESS-sponsored competition to submit short stories on the theme of  ‘Oor Wey o’ spikin’.  Eleven stories were chosen as winners, and four of these winners were written by Hazlehead  Academy S2 pupils.

24th May 2007 S4 Leavers met at the Academy this afternoon for the last formal event of their school careers. Attended by their Guidance Teachers, Senior staff and a number of other staff, Mrs Bonsall, Year Head, expressed how one chapter of their lives was closing but a new one opening up. We wish them all the best in their future careers or courses.
 
24th May 2007 Aberdeen group Outbox gave a lunchtime concert at Hazlehead today with the entrance money paid by pupils going to Amnesty International. The group played their new single ‘How To Fly’.

22nd May 2007 As an end of year treat,  a dance workshop was organised by Mrs Webster for all the pupils who had been working at dance in various forms throughout the year. Mark Cameron, a dancer who has appeared in stage shows in London, came along to school to take the class.

1st May 2007 The Hazlehead Young Enterprise team called 'Made for You' collected the Best Teamwork Award at the Grampian Young Enterprise awards tonight. Along with five other schools from the Grampian area they were finalists for the area trophy. Piped at the post for the overall trophy by Albyn School for Girls, they nevertheless won the award for Best Teamwork and received a cheque for £100.

29th April 2007 Five pupils joined took part in today's jaunt starting through the fields of new born lambs near Groddie. The steep, sharp initial climb was quickly behind and the group stopped for elevenses and to enjoy the views of sunny Lochnagar from just below the cloud layer. By the time  the summit was reached they were able to sit in the sunshine and enjoy intermittent views of Ben Avon and the surrounding area before heading back to the minibus. A short drive to Aboyne for ice cream and more sunbathing completed the day before heading home. A great day out.
 
26th April 2006 S2 pupils from Hazlehead took part today in the BP Carbon Challenge. The one day programme is designed to make pupils think about their carbon footprint and ways of reducing emissions of carbon dioxide.

25th April 2007 Our S6 students who are due to leave school next month have decided to mark their leaving by commissioning special Hazlehead Leavers tops. These were designed by the pupils themselves and the number 07 contains the signatures of all the S6 pupils. Unfortunately for those who did not order the very smart, functional tops, they are all sold out!
 
20th April 2007 A group of four S6 pupils have recently undertaken their expedition for the Gold Award of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Spending four days in the Glenshee area, they were accompanied by Mr Murray (acting Rector) plus a number of other staff including Nikki Lebedis from AMEC and Guidance Teacher Mr MacBean (currently on secondment).

19th April 2007 Congratulations to Bruce Croll, Stuart Armstrong and Michael Aitken who were in the Aberdeen Schools select squad this year.  They got to the final of the Scottish Schools Select Cup but unfortunately lost to the 'Shire 2-1 last night in a match at Peterhead.  Stuart scored an excellent goal for the city in the the first half putting them up 1-0.  A  disappointing outcome but the a great achievement for the boys to represent the select squad.
 
3rd April 2007 As part of their Standard Grade English course, S3 pupils have been researching the life and works of Robert Burns - learning about his childhood, translating 'To a Mouse' and experiencing a Burns Supper.
The project culminated in the pupils producing a display for the English corridor which included factual information about the poet, examples of his work and illustrations.

 
29th March 2007 The Cyrenians have held their Awards Ceremony following the 2007 Sleepout. Hazlehead Academy pupils were runners-up in the 'Most Money Raised by a School' category with the tremendous sum of £3080.

27th March 2007 The Hazlehead Hillwalkers were out on both days of the weekend: a staff trip on Saturday and a pupils' outing along the Dee from Banchory, into Blackhall Forest and on to Scolty via Hill of Gauch. We spent a lot of our time watching the fabulous bird and animal life which we encountered on the way: greater spotted woodpeckers, heron, grey wagtails, goosanders, pippets, buzzards, roe deer to name but a few.

Next trip is a staff/pupil outing to Morven on Sunday 29th April.

21st March 2007 The Music Department gave its first concert of the year with a selection of pieces. The Choir, orchestra, recorder group, saxophone quartet and various soloists were were joined by new additions of a pipe band, a Scottish style rock band and a pupil inspired close harmony septet called Senior Act.

21st March 2007 The Grampian Schools Cross Country Championships was held at Hazlehead Academy on Friday 16th March. Almost 1400 competitors from Primary and Secondary schools took part and Hazlehead Academy pupils did well in several competitions.

21st March 2007 An S3 Biology class had a visit from two special visitors recently - two Guide Dog puppies. Pupil Esther Gordon's Mum is a puppy walker who trains Guide Dogs for the blind and has visited the school to give the trainee dogs an experience of meeting lots of young people in one place. Training like this essential to get trainee dogs used to new and unusual situations.

Development' to himself and Frances Allan of AMEC in London. Ross has been working wth AMEC since leaving school at the end of S5 last year and is going on to university in September.

The Norwegian exchange programme has concluded with the students from Norway and Hazlehead enjoying a traditional Scottish Ceilidh. After emotional farewells at the Academy, the Norwegian group left for Dyce airport - at 4.30 am!

The exchange has been a terrific success this year and our thanks go to the parents who acted as hosts and made the whole exchange possible.

16th March 2007 Hazlehead Academy took on a shade of red today as it joined the rest of the country in Red Nose Day. Pupils were able to forgo their normal uniform if they wore something red. As a result of everyone's efforts the Charities Committee raised a total of £1000.

14th March 2007 A brand new Interhouse competition took place today with the 'Just-a-Minute' Challenge. Requiring team members to talk on a topic they were given for 60 seconds, the team from Dunecht proved to be masters of the spoken word. They each managed to blether on for a whole minute on topics as diverse as 'friends' and 'cuddly toys'

As a result of a burst water main which flooded the school boiler house, the school had to close to pupils for three days. A limited provision was made for seniors during the closure.

Our thanks to the janitors and engineers who worked hard to get the school up and running again.

 
5th March 2007 S1 girls netball from Hazlehead proudly display their medals after winning the S1 Aberdeen Schools Netball Tournament. The team beat beat Robert Gordon's College B, Saint Margaret's A, and Albyn in their group section.  They then went on to beat Ellon in the semi finals and finally Saint Margaret's A in the final 11 - 6.
 
1st March 2007 Another new Interhouse competition has taken place. This is the Build-it Challenge which saw teams given a construction task. Engineers from Amec, Hazlehead's partner company, were on hand to pass judgement and award Interhouse points. more>>

26th February 2007 Congratulations to the Charities Committee (composed of both staff and pupils) who organised a fundraising event in the form of a Ceilidh held at the Station Hotel. This proved to be very popular with pupils dressing up for the event in their most glamorous dresses and Highland attire. Over £500 was raised in aid of a Multiple Sclerosis charity.

The behaviour of the pupils at the event also brought many complimentary comments from the staff at the hotel - well done everyone.

6th February 2007 Hazlehead Academy has been celebrating the success of its girls and boys teams in the Coca-Cola7's Tournament. This is a national seven-a-side football tournament for 12 and 13 year old school children. There are both boys and girls teams.

3rd February 2007 Over 100 pupils and staff from Hazlehead Academy took part in this year's Sleepout to raise funds for the Cyrenians -  a local charity which assists homeless young people. Although termed a 'Sleepout' there was not much sleeping by the pupils who seemed to stay awake all night! Staff did what they could to grab some shut-eye.
 

 
2nd February 2007 Hazlehead Academy competed against the independent sector in an invitation only cross country meeting at Lathallan School in Angus. Along with Mearns Academy, Hazlehead were the only local authority school competing against Robert Gordon's College, Loretto School, Craigclowan School, St Margaret's School, Albyn School, Ardvreck School, Aberlour House and Strathallan School.

21st January 2007 Hazlehead Hill walking Club braved the cold weather this weekend with a trip to Glentanar. It included a circumnavigation of The Strone from the visitors' centre which included the pupils doing some navigation at which they were pretty good! After about 12km of forest tracks the group, with Mr BEgg and Mr Webster returned to the minibus and adjourned to Flora's Tea room for tea and buns. Once again the group were first class!
 

 
16th January 2007 A number of events are coming this week and next relating to the transfer of P7 pupils to Hazlehead Academy. We will be having our 7th annual series of 'Roadshows' in Airyhall Primary, Fernielea Primary, Hazlehead Primary and Kingsford Primary. 12th January 2007 Hazlehead Academy has just completed a special Health Week. The canteen offered special menus and a Junkfood Roadshow Chef will visited the school to work with S2 pupils in the Home Economics department.
The PE department also ran alternative classes which saw pupils being put through their paces by instructors  in Soo Yang Do (martial arts) and from the Royal Marines. more>>

Pupils can also enter an on-line Web Quiz, for which points will be awarded towards the Interhouse Competition.
 


 

12th January 2007 The most recent round of the Interhouse Competition took place today with Bruce House winning the S3 Tutor Team Challenge Select. The winning team are pictured with Mrs Munro, their Guidance Teacher and three of the House Captains.

11th December 2006 A group of six Hazlehead students have been selected to take part in a placement scheme with our partner company AMEC. The students are pictured with the management team from the Britannia Satellites project in which they will be involved during their placement.

23rd November 2006 Hazlehead pupils have done exceptionally well in the Scottish National Trampoline Championships which took place recently which included two first places to become National Champions.

19th November 2006 A group of S6 Hazlehead Students recently undertook a week long work placement in Norway. Part of the school's Norway Exchange Programme, the pupils' concerned will host Norwegian students when they come to Aberdeen in March.

It is with great sadness that we record the death of James Lobban who died in the early morning of Friday 10th November 2006. James had been ill for some considerable time though he bore this with great fortitude and was hard at work in the Music department until Christmas 2005.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – New Bronze group
There was a high turnout at a meeting today at lunchtime for all pupils in S3 who wanted to find out more about doing the Award.  Many pupils listened intently to what doing the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award would involve and went away with lots of things to think about.  Two handouts were given out and if you missed the meeting you can download these from the website or see Mrs Rutherford.

6th November 2006 A group of Hazlehead students are attempting to become paper millionaires! They are tasking part in the Student Investor Challenge which is the premier economics/business competition in the UK. Hugely successful over the last 13 years, it is aimed primarily at 14-19 year-olds to introduce them to the heady world of the stock market, investments and business economics.

30th October 2006 S6 pupils had a fancy dress Halloween party last Friday to raise funds for their Prom in June. The work put into their costumes was terrific and the seniors are to be congratulated on their organisation of the event. Acting Rector Mr Murray who attended the event commented on the excellent behaviour of the pupils who all had a great time.

27th October 2006 The Hazlehead Hill Walking club has been re instituted by Modern Languages teacher Mr Webster. Mr Webster who is a keen hill walker and also a Mountain Rescue Leader took a group of pupils on an expedition at the start of this month. By all accounts a good time was had by all despite the weather!

30th September 2006 Hazlehead and AMEC took the world of industry by storm last night with the annual Industry Education Dinner. Working with staff from Hazlehead and AMEC, a group of pupils put together a wonderful evening of entertainment for the 170 guests at the Marcliffe Hotel.

22nd September 2006 Sponsor Day 2006 took place on Thursday and was one of the most ambitious ever undertaken. Pupils were given two opportunities over the day to take part in a whole range of activities from rock climbing to producing art murals. Two groups even managed to produce rockets which flew!

20th September 2006 Paul visited Hazlehead Academy today to meet a selection of pupils at the school. Paul's visit to the school was organised through the school's partner AMEC, who are corporate partners in the Paul Lawrie Junior Programme. Paul chatted golf with some of the schools keen golfers. One or two were surprised to discover that their current handicap is actually lower than Paul's was at the same age!

14th September 2006 Head Girl Catrin Dickson was a guest of the Rotary Club of Aberdeen St Machar today. The club sponsored Catrin's involvement in the Young Leadership week held at the Abernethy Centre during the summer.  Catrin and Neale Tosh from Oldmachar Academy spoke of their experiences at the RYLA Camp and Catrin brought along an entertaining DVD taken at the girls camp. We are grateful to the St Machar branch of the Rotary Club for their generosity in providing the opportunity to Hazlehead pupils to take part in this excellent scheme.
 

 
12th September 2006 Design Activity Day has arrived once more for S1 classes. Over the course of this week every S1 class will be involved in a design task. A joint activity by the Art, Home Economics and Design and Technology departments, the day is designed to bring out the creative talents of pupils and to get them working together as part of a team.

12th September 2006 Black Cat Theatre company visited the school today to bring a taste of Shakespeare to the pupils. Second year pupils were given a treat when they experienced a stunning performance of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

5th September 2006 Hazlehead student, Fiona Rae, recently took part in the Nuffield School Bursary Scheme Scottish Celebration Event. This was held at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland in Edinburgh Zoo. The scheme allows Scottish school students to work alongside practicing scientists.

4th September 2006 A number of pupils from Hazlehead had a break from Shakespeare and experienced a different side of the Theatre. They went to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show at His Majesty's Theatre accompanied by a number of staff.   more>>
 
1st September 2006 The Interhouse competition for 2006-7 kicked off today with the S1 Tutor Team Challenge heat for Bruce House. Over the coming months there will be a great many more competitions. We will update the scoreboard as and when the houses gain points. An exciting year is in prospect.

29th August 2006 A group of S6 students have 'bagged' their first Munro - only 283 to go! The students are all taking part in their Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and although their expedition took place last session we have only just managed to get hold of pictures of their trip to Glen Clova and their climb to the summit of Mayar.  more>>
 
28th August 2006 Hazlehead Academy sends its congratulations to Richie Ramsay who has achieved one of the greatest prizes in amateur golf. Richie won the US Amateur trophy, the first Scottish player to do so since 1898.
Richie attended Hazlehead Academy from 1994 till  2000 and was the Academy's Head Boy in the 1999-2000 session.
 

 
 

24th August 2006 A mature student who studied at Hazlehead from 2003-2005 recently returned to receive congratulations from Alan Murray (Acting Rector). Calum Templeton received  an award for gaining the 3rd highest mark in Scotland in the  Advanced Higher Physics exam.

Calum is now studying physics at Cambridge.

3rd July 2006 A group of Hazlehead pupils recently took part in the Anne Frank Achievement Award. The Anne Frank Awards are designed to help young people recognise and emulate acts of moral courage. Our group put on a splendid presentation though unfortunately did not win They did however receive a certificate recognising their contribution towards racial and cultural awareness and equality.
 
3rd July 2006 Hazlehead has won the league title of Aberdeen Schools Golf League by beating Robert Gordons College 1 v 2 Hazlehead Academy.

8th June 2006 The achievements and successes of 'ACE' school pupils and staff were celebrated at the 2006 Aberdeen City Education Awards ceremony held in the Beach Ballroom this evening. Hazlehead Academy won four of the fourteen categories - a remarkable achievement.

March 21st 2006 S2 pupils from Hazlehead took part in a major event called Make It In Scotland. This was sponsored by Careers Scotland and was designed to give pupils a taste of the world of industry and manufacturing. more>>
 
14th March 2006 A first Year class took part in the Aberdeen Folk and Story Telling Festival by paying a visit to Crathes Castle last week. There they were entertained by Gerry Durkin with stories and songs of ghosts and goblins. The pupils were also given a tour of the castle which included the Green Room, well known for its ghost, the Green Lady. Unfortunately, or maybe that should be fortunately, she did not put in an appearance for the pupils!
 
6th March 2006 Pupils from Hazlehead are staging a production this week titled Ernie's Incredible Illucinations. The play is a light-hearted show, written specifically for performance by young people. It tells the story of young Ernie and her vivid imagination, which is always getting her, and those around her, into all kinds of trouble. more>>

24th February 2006 Senior Hazlehead pupils present a cheque to Miles Paterson of the Cyrenians. Pupils raised a total of £2100 by their participation in the Sleepout held in the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre in January. more>>
 
16th February 2006 The tragic death of a Scottish soldier from Aberdeen was the inspiration of a poem by Deputy Head Girl Kimberley Robinson. L/Cpl Allan Douglas, 22, from Aberdeen, was serving with The Highlanders, and died after coming under fire in the Maysan area in Iraq. He was the 100th UK soldier to die in Iraq since the 2003 invasion.

Kimberley's poem echoes the tragedy of servicemen lost in many past conflicts but also reflects on the personal tragedy of loved ones recently lost.

14th January 2006 A group of 91 staff and pupils took part in this year's Cyrenians' Sleepout 2006. They spent the night sleeping rough (OK, with sleeping bags and a few home comforts) along with 1000 others in order to raise money for the Cyrenians who support homeless young people.

Rachel Corsie of S5 has been playing for the Under 19 Girls Scotland squad in the First Round European Championship Qualifying stage. Rachel is pictured opposite in the recent international against Northern Ireland.
Scotland beat Croatia 3 - 0 and the Faroe Islands 5-0. Unfortunately they lost to England  3-0 but are already guaranteed a place in the next round.

12th September 2005 A Duke of Edinburgh practice silver expedition took place this weekend from Braemar to Blair Atholl - a distance of 30 miles. The seven pupils taking part walked from Saturday morning and ended up at Blair Atholl on Monday lunchtime, having spent two nights under canvas. more>>

Hazlehead pupils have been celebrating a year of success in the Northern League Trampoline Competition against teams such as Mastrick Springbox, Banks o Dee, Banchory, Stonehaven, Forres and the Beacon Springers Trampoline club.

Although the school has offered trampolining in the past, it has come to the fore in recent years due to the work of Mrs Pamela Webster in the PE department.

This week is Alcohol Awareness Week at Hazlehead Academy. Pupils awareness of issues surrounding the abuse of alcohol are being raised this week through a series of special events. Assemblies are focusing on the theme and pupils are receiving talks from the school nurse, Ruth Duguid, and from our police liaison officer, Ian Robison.

May 20th 2005 Hazlehead Academy has a very successful trampoline club, coached and encouraged by PE staff member Mrs Pamela Webster. The girls and boys taking part have achieved a lot of success recently and the club is one of the most popular after school activities.
