Sports Leaders at Hazlehead
Primary School
Seventeen pupils, all from
S3, have been taking the Sports Leaders qualification. Part of their
assessment involves putting their training to work in the community
and so they found themselves working with the Primary 2 class at
Hazlehead. They spent an hour with the youngsters giving them a
taste of different sports and activities. From the photographs, it
would appear that everyone is enjoying themselves!

U-14 Team win AFC Shield
The U-14 football team won
the Aberdeen F.C. Shield after a very exciting match against
Bankhead Academy at Crombie Park, Culter. Hazlehead were 2-0 up at
half-time after two excellent goals from Daniel Scott. However,
Bankhead came storming back with three goals in 15 minutes.
Time was running out and it was looking as it would not be
Hazlehead's day. With 15 SECONDS of normal time remaining,
Nicol Christie scored to draw the game level.
Tjhis totally knocked the stufing out of
Bankhead who totally fell apart and allowed Scott McDougall to score
two more goals in stoppage time. Final score was Hazlehead 5 - 3
Bankhead.
Pictured below is the team with manager Gary Giles, who has said he
would not be throwing his hat in the ring for the vacant Aberdeen
F.C. job.

Aberdeen Curl in Sheddocksley.
This is a special course
organised through the Active schools initiative. Although typically
associated with a slightly older generation, the Hazlehead
youngsters have really taken to the sport and are reported to be
greatly enjoying it. A high level of skill is involved but several
of our youngsters have already demonstrated themselves to be
naturals at - perhaps future Olympic medallists in the making!

Hazlehead Academy has won the Aberdeen School's Golf
League Final. After a very close match between two very talented
teams, Hazlehead beat Robert Gordon's College 2-1. The victory was
set up by the 'Little and Large' pairing of Grant Ross and Fraser
McDonald who secured a 3&2 win. Michael Angus and Calum Stirton

Hazlehead Pupils Play in the Coca-Cola 7's
Final
Unfortunately the boys missed out on winning this competition having
failed to make it through to the final game. However, the positive
aspect of the matches was that they did lose to the eventual
winners., Stewart's Melville College. It was still a fantastic
achievement to make it through to the final stages and a great day
out was had at Tynecastle. Mr Giles did not fail to remind the boys
that they were 11-a-side champions of all Scotland!

Match results were as follows:
Game 1 - Hazlehead 1 - 2 Stewart's Melville College
Game 2 - Hazlehead 0 - 0 St Luke's High School
Game 3 - Hazlehead 2 - 0 Dalziel High School
Hazlehead pupils' U-13
Scottish Cup Final Victory
In an outstanding match, Hazlehead U-13
team has won the Scottish Cup. After a long and very tough yet
successful season, the team has put the icing on the cake by being
one of the few times from the North-east to ever win the
competition. In a run which is on a par with the Gothenburg greats
of the 1980's the squad has maintained a consistency and team spirit
that would put many professional sides to shame. Head of PE and
manager Gary Giles was "very proud of the boys". Over 170 schools
had entered the tournament so to win the trophy is a fantastic
achievement. Mr Giles said that "they had been an excellent squad to
work with and that they listened and worked hard at making
improvements. The Evening Express named Cameron Elphinstone as the
hero on the night for scoring the goal but everyone at the school
recognises that only true team spirit can make for the success that
the U-13 squad have enjoyed this season.
The Cup win comes on top of the win the boys achieved against
Peterhead in he final of the SSFA North Regional Final. Well done
everyone.

Hazlehead U-13

Hazlehead Academy's Under 13 team has
won the Green Final Trophy by beating Harlaw Academy 2-0. Both goals
were scored by Ryan Cameron. Ex-Aberdeen player and legend Stuart
McKimmie awarded the boys winners medals and named pupil Kai Ross as
man of the match.

U-13 Scottish Cup
- The 5th round tie against Holyrood Secondary of Glasgow took place
at Lesser Hampden at the weekend. This was essentially a home tie
for the opposition so our boys were up against it from the start.
Hazlehead started the game strongly and were pressing the Holyrood
goal. Although they had the vast majority of possession and
territory they couldn't make the all important breakthrough. The
sucker punch came when Holyrood scored against the run of play just
five minutes from half-time. Keeper Camran Knowles then pulled off a
stunning save to keep the score at 0-1.
Hazlehead started the second half strongly and soon gained a
deserved equaliser from Sam Stephen who prodded home from close
range to make it 1-1. Hazlehead continued to press and went 2-1 up
through a goal from Kai Ross. Holyrood came back and made it 2-2
with a 35 yard thunder bolt. The game ended level with both teams
looking for that elusive winner.
Into extra time and though both teams pressed hard neither could get
that goal in the first 15 minutes. Eventually, Hazlehead had the
breakthrough they needed with Kai Ross getting his second of the
game to make it 3-2. The result was put beyond doubt with a great
run from Jordan Watt who made it 4-2. The boys can now look forward
to a place in the quarter finals!

Hazlehead Girls
Travel to Shetland for Netball Competition

Hazlehead Academy's Senior Netball Team took
to the ocean waves recently when they made their way to Lerwick in
Shetland to play a Scottish Cup match. Their opponents were Anderson
High School and in a fiercely competitive match they were beaten 43-34.
This was only after one of their players, Hannah Taylor, had to limp off
the court with a bad ankle injury. Played in a very tense atmosphere in
front of a highly partisan crowd, the girls did themselves proud, only
losing ground in the final quarter.
Apart from a rather stormy sea crossing, one of the other highlights of
the trip was spotting a seal just offshore!
Hazlehead Girls Compete at
Hampden in the Coca-Cola Scottish Girls 7's
The sixteen teams made it through to the National Finals of the 2007
Coca-Cola 7's will have memories of an event that will live with
them for a long long time.
The sun was splitting the skies and temperatures were reaching as
high as 25 degrees on the pitch but it didn't stop the youngsters
making the most of their day on the hallowed turf of Hampden Park.
Hazlehead was represented by the girls side who had competed along
with 1000 other teams to reach the finals.
Unfortunately our girls did not reach
the final although Lynsey Coutts and Sarah Fraser managed to find
the back of the net. Congratulations go to all the girls who took
part for having reached the finals of the competition.
Hazlehead Under 13s Win Esso Trophy Final
Hazlehead Academy
9 Inverurie Academy 6
Having beaten Peterhead Academy, Bankhead Academy and Aberdeen Grammar
School to reach the Esso Trophy Regional Final, the Hazlehead U-13 team
have now beaten Inverurie Academy in the final. The final started badly
for Hazlehead as they went 1-0 down after just 90 seconds. Cheered on by
a sizeable Hazlehead crowd, the scores were brought level with a
goal from Grant Hepburn.
Another goal was dropped just before half-time and the team went in for
the break down 1-2. In the second half the team really started to play
and goals from Jon Gregor (2), Stuart Morrison (2), Grant Wilson, Luke
Bruce, Scott Hepburn, and another from Grant Hepburn saw Hazlehead
emerge winners 9-6. The game was a pulsating affair that went from end
to end. Pick of the goals was a 20 metre rocket from captain Stuart
Morrison following some excellent build up play.
Congratulations go to all the boys who took part. Well done.
