Hazlehead Academy - proposed 32
period week, Information for Parents
Dear Parent/Carer,
From June 2010, we plan to change the structure of the school
day. Currently, there are 40 x 40 minute periods in the week and we
propose to move to a new school week which will consist of 32 x 50
minute periods.

How will this benefit your son/daughter?
50 minute periods are better for teaching and
learning. Teachers feel 80 minutes is too long and 40 minutes
too short. Many schools have changed to this structure.
·
Fewer changeovers between periods, a gain in
teaching time and a calmer school.
·
50 minute lunchtime and early finish still allows
for our excellent extra-curricular programme.
·
A more economical timetable, allowing a slight
increase in teaching time in S5/6
Consultation
Process
We have overwhelming support
for the 32 Period Week from teachers, Support Staff, Primary Head
Teachers and Education Officers. The Parent Council has also been
very positive about the change. Most importantly, Year Heads
consulted with the Pupil Councils who could see the benefits of the
change.
I am now seeking
feedback from the wider Parent Forum. If you have any comments you
would like to submit, please feel free to do so through the website
or by contacting the school.
I do hope you support
this change. Our main reason for doing this is to improve the
learning experience we offer your son or daughter. We continue to
strive for excellence.
