S1 pupils James ,
Hannah, Amy and Jamie from 1BN gave up their lunchtimes for
two months to participate in the Shell Enterprise and Science 2007
Challenge. The competition involved devising a way to use a
renewable energy source to power a Christmas tree with 1000 lights.
The team name was Xmas eXperts and they came up with people as the
renewable energy source! They decided to harness the movement
(kinetic) energy of people walking into Shell to power the lights.
They designed a floor tile that when walked on moved a metal coil
over a magnet to generate energy which was then stored in a battery.
The team won first prize for their “innovative and brave design” and
were awarded a laptop and £200 for the school. Well done Xmas
eXperts!
