Hazlehead Students 'Make Their Mark'!
The Make Your Mark Challenge is a way of improving students’ enterprise skills through work related learning. It is based on a national competition in which pupils have to undertake a task related to enterprise. The challenge set the pupils was to come up with a new and innovative business idea that takes its inspiration from something local. The business could be a product or a service – as long as it’s a ‘cool’ creation and makes money.

The local area was used as the spark for the business idea, for example:
a famous local person
a local place or local resource
local talent
local history
local culture

A ‘cool creation’ had to be a profitable business that minimises its impact on the environment. Green businesses are essential to the future of the UK economy and our planet so we want pupils had to consider the carbon footprint of their business and think of innovative ideas to reduce it.

Our winning team’s plans are now submitted to the next stage of the competition. Their idea was for energy saving greenhouse combined with a wind turbine.

Winning pupils are pictured with members of the Business Studies Department who ran the event. Pictured 3rd from the right is Karen Dalton of Amec who helped judge the event. Thanks to Ms Grubb for undertaking most of the organisation for the event.
