Hazlehead Health Week - January
2009
Pupils from Hazlehead have been enjoying a special 'Health Week'.
Activities have included an introduction to rowing, training from
ex-army PE instructors and a special healthy eating session for
pupils in the Home Economics department. Assemblies have also been
devoted to the theme of Health and Wellbeing. We hope it provides
our pupils a good start to the new Year. Click on the pictures below

Hazlehead Health Week - January
2008
Health promoting activities played a big part this week at Hazlehead
Academy. As part of its drive to promote healthier lifestyles
amongst its pupils the PE, Home Economics and a number of other
departments took part in a week of special events.
Home Economics put 200 pupils through a
"Junkfood Roadshow". Pupils were treated to a range of entertaining
activities such as pizza making, interactive question and answer
sessions with lots of relevant visual aids and seeing what actually
goes into your favourite foods! Those who saw it will never forget
the beefheart - straight from the abattoir or the simulated
processed burger with its masses of sugar, salt, fat and yes - beef
heart! Pupils were able to put thoughts of burger out of their minds
by tucking into a healthy pizza prepared by our own volunteers.
Comments from pupils included "That was great!", "I wish I was a
vegetarian!", "I wish we could have more of this" and "I'll never
eat another burger!"
Ms Davidson of the Music department took
lunchtime classes in dance. All sorts of funky dance moves were
introduced to the pupils who had a great time. Boys were rather thin
on the ground but perhaps some can be persuaded to take part next
year!
Activities in the PE department were
given a fresh look this week with some new sports. This included
skipping (bringing back old playground games which pupils thought
was great fun), self defence (Mr Fraser gave instruction on what to
do if attacked with a knife etc - best advice though was to run
away!), boxing fitness (putting pupils through strenuous exercise
routines) and the fitness room (working on cardio-vascular routines,
steppers, bikes and rowing machines).
